Can an ELECTRIC range be installed so it touches a wall?
Iím going to buy a new electric range. My current one was installed in 1986, and has probably reached the end of its life.

The current unit is about 1.5 inches from the wall. The front of it is currently flush with the cabinets, so I was wondering if that was done for aesthetics or if it was installed with a gap between the wall and the back of the range because of a code / safety reason.

It doesnít appear that it was kept from the wall to provide room for the plug, because there is plenty of room behind the bottom drawer to allow the cord to be plugged in safely.

The front of the new model Iím considering will be flush with the cabinets if I push it all the way to the back wall. Is it safe to do that, as long as there is clearance at the bottom to plug it in, or do I need to keep it a certain distance from the wall?

The installation manual will tell you everything you need to know about installing the range safely. It will even tell you things you didn't need to know like don't lick the burners to see if they are hot.
