95 Taurus electrical fire

95 Taurus and the battery was dead. I got a new battery and started to put it in. First thing I should have noticed as wrong was sparking at the negative terminal when I connected it. Before I even tightened the termnal, smoke, then flames in the wiring up by the firewall, between the shock tower (passenger side) and fire wall.

Very exciting! After oh shhhht I jerked off the negative cable and the flames were gone. A wire in the harness was burned completely through.

Anybody have any insights on the cause of this dead short? Key was not in the ignition, just replacing a dead battery. Thanks.

Was it a large wire or a small wire?

And was the wire a do-it-yourself add-on wire without a fuse?

Small wire, part of the wiring harness that runs back there. Should have been protected by a fuse. Smoke, flames, o shhhht!! Whoa!

Oh, and I am, well, positive that the positive cable was connected to the + terminal and the negative cable was connected to the - terminal on the battery.
