I found ear-plug heaven
I have tried so many types of ear plugs and none have reached my level of satisfaction. They seem to be either to hard to put in, take off, too large, too small, to expensive, to obtrusive and basically just a pain.
While I was searching for my lost ear plugs I ran across a 20' roll of 1/2" round foam insulation I had used for a couple of windows I put in. I think the roll cost about 3 bucks. Well, I pulled off two, one inch and a half chunks of the insulation and stuck em in my ears. Viola! Their easy to put in, take out, feel real good and cheap as hell. Sounds like you're talking about caulk backer rod? I think you'll get even better performance if you put the backer rod in each ear, and then top that with a small dab of caulk. You'll be sound-proofed, AND weather-sealed!

How about clear silicone... perfectly molded to your ear once it cures. Of course it might be difficult to remove...

Same theory as the little disposable orange foam plugs that you twist and insert. But I would be a lot more comfortable with the chemical composition of foam plugs designed to go into my ear canal, than with the composition of backer rod
