What do you think about the zinsler oil based primer for cedar siding?

Yes, I need to prime some weathered areas before staining with solid color stain from Sherwin Williams

I use it all the time. I thin it a tad as it goes on like peanut butter

If you are using an oil stain, it is usually not primed first. The stain needs to sink into the wood.

Actually I'm not sure what to use! I know that I need to prime as I have some weathered and bare cedar and other areas that still have the solid stain intact.
Just looking for a solid, smooth cover!?

If you need to prime that's quite alright if you're using a latex based solid stain. Rarely do I prime cedar that is going to be stained, but, if it's really weathered, that's a good idea as plenty of tannins will leach through the topcoats in areas like that. Take a look at SW's Woodscapes.
