wood moulding

I'm putting up new moulding for doors and windows. I want to stain instead of paint. I've put up moulding a bunch of times which i painted before hand and just filled in spaces and nail holes with caulk. Always white paint of course. I was thinking the best way to do this is stain after the wood is up so any gaps and nails holes could be filled with puddy and sanded. Someone told me to do the opposite, mix some stain and puddy together and use that to fill holes and gaps. Anyone ever heard of this?

I think Minwax sells a stainable wodd putty. They also sell pre stained wood putty. I would putty and sand before I stained.

I don't like the sound of that
Are they making their own colored putty?

I use colored putty, and stainable putty, both with great results
I can't see making your own
