Why do painters wear white?

Maybe off-topic, but what is the real reason to wear white? I've been asked by many people, but I don't think it's a measure of how dirty or clean you are. I wear white shirts to do many messy chores; mainly because there's usually a spot already or the cool novelty screen print has faded. Also, white is cooler in 110 degree sunlight. I do wear other colors, though. Sometimes I forget I'm wearing "good clothes" when I get caught-up and sidetracked.

Why do painters wear white?

Simply a guess, but ... I would say that light reflecting off of a colored outfit could affect the way the paint/primer would look as it was going on the wall.

Why do painters wear white?

That explanantion makes sense if you are using white paint, but if you are using dark tinted pain there would be contrast.

i am more inclined to think it's more traditional than pratical,
just like police wearing blue and chefs wearing puffy hats

another thought is you can sucessfuly bleach white clothes....

Why do painters wear white?

It does go back a ways though...a long way back
Possibly it was that painters mostly used white paints back in the day, so it really was a way of looking neater, longer
Also it is true that union painters chose the "whites" as their uniform way back when, possibly for the reason above

So if it was for neatness, or any other reasons, the union thing solidified it
...and that was over a hundred years ago so it could go back further than that

Why do painters wear white?

Painters wear white for a number of reasons. It is a bit of a warning to everyone else, if you see a painter you tend not to touch anything. It looks much more professional when a bunch of painters turn up to a job wearing white as oppose to every one wearing whatever colour they want. What if all painters wore red or blue they would all still be wearing different shades of red or blue and they would fade at different levels. You can bleach your whites clean without fading. Most colours used when painting are a light colour, so if you’re wearing any other colour than white its going to show a lot more. Temperature wise it’s also the coolest colour to wear outside.

Thank you for bumping a four year old thread to repeat things that have already been said. This forum is now a better place.

Because we're pure as the driven snow, virginal. And, if we had horses, they would be white too. We're good guys!
