My husband and I are re-doing our kitchen and dining area. We knocked out the wall and made it one big room. The cabinets are maple spice and the floor is a natural maple (my husband read you should go 2-3 shades different for contrast). The question is--what color do we stain our baseboards and window/door trim--the color of the floor or the color of the cabinets? Or would you even recommend going with painting them white?
If the trim is also hardwood I would hate to see you paint over it. I would go with the darer stain color against the lighter floor. You will want a couple coats of poly to help with scuff marks and so forth.
If it is just pine or something, than you might want to think about priming and painting as it will never look like it fits with the hardwood anyhow.
It really also comes down to the look you want and personal taste. Of course, you should take into consideration the type, style and age of the house and try to fit its character within reason. And, what is going on elsewhere in the house? Is the trim in other rooms painted white? You might want to go for consistency.
