Question

What is the proper product to clean a previously painted wood door prior to painting?

I have a wood panel door, previously painted over 20 years ago, which I want to repaint. I think latex was used, but I'll check by rubbing a small area with alcohol to see if it rubs off (latex).

The door is quite dirty (it separates the basement from the garage). I want to clean the door prior to (and after) light sanding. Assuming the existing paint is latex, would denatured alcohol be the correct thing to use? How about rubbing alcohol (which I happen to already have)? Or should I use trisodium phosphate? I've seen references to both alcohol and TSP but am not sure which is more appropriate in this situation. Thanks.

.......and sometimes just warm water and a damp rag are all you need. Sometimes using all the cleaners with chemicals in them leaves a residue if not properly rinsed off.

Alcohol would be overkill. And never use rubbing alcohol as a cleaner as it contains lanolin which will remain on the surface.

Do not use any more moisture than you have to on any wood door.

Thanks for all the responses. Dirtex (powder) looks like the best thing to me so that's what I'm going to use.
