What paint will stick?

I have some 3/4 inch particle board that I'd like to seal just in-case it gets wet. Doesn't matter what it looks like. I opened a can of oil based stain and found that all the solids had settled and I couldn't stir it up. Instead of throwing it out, I poured the oil onto the particle board and spread it around with a roller. The oil soaked right in, but I don't think I've got the seal I was looking for.

Will a fresh coat of oil based stain or paint stick to this?

Should I go ahead and pour the rest of the oil to it?

Thanks,
Rich

Hmmm...can't say I've run into this before
I'm not sure another (coat of) stain will seal any better
As long as it's adhering, I'd go over it with an oil-based solid color stain for more protection

I have never heard of a stain used as a sealer, oilbased or not. I'd try it on some scraps and see what happens (tests).

I DO have a discard can for old varnish and we occasionally throw in stains and dirty brush cleaners (mineral spirits) to lower the viscosity. This concoction has proven to be a pretty good sealer.
