What paint do I use in the bathroom?

Hello to all this is my first post on diy. First what's the diff between latex and acrylic latex? A friend told me to use oil based paint in the bathroom, but I havnt seen any. I havnt looked hard but I did see this acrylic latex. I think it was valspar kitchen and bath line. Need your input.

Acrylic latex is generally more flexible and more resistant to chalking and fading than latex.
In this day and age I see no reason to use oil base. A good grade of acrylic latex will perform very well in your bathroom. I recently used some Sherwin Williams Harmony in a bath, it's acrylic latex and liked it very much, but use what brand you have available locally.

I think if you are painting a bathroom you should use an anti-mold and mildew paint. This will help prevent the growth of mold in the damp atmosphere. Since a bathroom is usually an enclosed area with little air ventilation I suggest using a low- zero VOC paint. This will make your breathing environment much more healthy. There is a brand I found at True Value called ECOtrend Collagen, that works excellent for being an all natural paint.

But what is in that paint to make it mold and mildew resistant. There are many paint companies who put harmful fungicides and mildewcies in their paint. These chemicals tend to wear off after a couple of years, making your walls susceptible to mold and mildew again. You should opt for a paint the has the mold and mildew fighters already built into the paint. I know there are paints that use Microban technology, they build the anti-mold properties right into the paint. So they don't wear off they protection lasts for the life of the paint.

Is Zinsser certified by GREENGUARD or Greenseal. I couldn't imagine painting my house with a paint full of harmful chemicals. Especially beacuse I have a child. Children's lungs are smaller, meaning they breath in twice as many harmful chemicals than an adult. Not only that but children are more susceptible to these toxins.

I will paint my house as often as I need with chemical free paint. And Natural mold and mildew resistant formulas.

I always use Davis Perfection. It's a Zero VOC ceramic paint with Microban. Excellent stuff. However it's regional. Made in Virginia and only available in about 1/3 of the country. It depends on where you are if it's available.

All I'm saying is that it is good for a paint to be third party tested for clean indoor air quality. It keeps the company responsible for its product. That is why I always look for the GREENGUARD approval.

Many paint companies can "claim" to improve air quality, it doesn't mean they are telling the truth. The only way you can be sure is if you see a seal of approval by a third party, independent organiztion.
