What do you need to know to paint cinder block

What painting techniques can you do to a plain cinder block wall to make it look better?

To be honest, it's tough to make cinder block look like anything other than, well, cinder block. I've seen people rag-roll it, sponge it, marbleize it, & mostly it looks like you're trying to cover something up. If you have some artistic ability, you could paint a faux picture on the wall of a beach or mountain setting or just about anything your mind can come up with. You might want to consider skim coating the wall to make it "flush" and flat just like regular drywall and then you could simply paint it. Maybe do a search on YouTube to get some ideas also.

How about a little more detail. Where is it? Is it painted now? Tell us more about what you mean by "look better". As Gymschu said, even painted, a cinder block wall will always be just a painted cinder block wall.

Yeah, the other people gave more helpful answers than my first one: I'll take my own advice and try again. If it's currently unpainted, I vote for skim coating to make it look flat, or even a texture to look like stucco, then paint.

You were on Mike. I basically just asked him to give us what you thought was missing. It was a vague request.

If it is un painted, you will need to use block filler first. Be prepared to work, this is heavy stuff.
