what to do with inside of drawers

I'm re-painting cabinets and its doors and drawers. Trying to figure out what to do with the inside of the drawers. Contact paper seems easiest but I'm afraid it will start getting unglued over time. Straight painting will lead to a sticky or tacky finish. Is there a finish we could put over the paint, or maybe we could even stain the inside?

Contact paper will not last forever but neither will paint. Stain and varnish will last as long as paint.

I say contact paper and re-do it every 5 to 10 years as it fails
