What color should I paint the floor of my white deck?

We have had a white deck with white floors for years. Our property is tree-heavy and, of course, we end up having to paint the floor of the deck once a year due to the mildew and just general pealing.

We set out last year to attempt to strip the floor as to stain it a redwood color, but should have known better because of the number of layers of paint from over the years. It is that time of the year that it needs painting again, and I know there has to be a better color than white. Most of what I see is gray, which is alright, and I also see some brown paint that doesn't look too flat.

I was tossing around the idea of a rich black floor for a pretty sharp design statement, but I have never seen this done before. What would the pros/cons be? Would it look strange? If so, I need some other recommendations. I think the thing that bothers me is the flat grays-looks too artificial. I'm not opposed to a distressed look--just need direction. Thanks very much!

Unless your really into cleaning and painting i would never ever paint a deck floor white. It's going to show every single speck of dirt and paints just going to wear off and peel.
A dark color will be so hot no one will be able to walk on it and will faid fast. Black will also how every spot, even water will stain it as it drys.
Why not replace the deck boards with a composit lumber and never have to paint or seal again?

Paint on a deck just never works out. Water tends to lay on the horizontal surface causing premature failure of the coating. Semi-transparent STAIN is the way to go. Black, I would never use black. As Joe said the heat build up would be off the charts & it too would fail prematurely. No matter how you look at it, you have a boatload of work ahead of you. Stripping a deck is a monstrously difficult job. Even if you get all the paint off, what lies beneath may not be a good surface to recoat. Gotta go with Joe on this one.........might be a great time to look at replacing.

Never ever paint a deck! Stain it semi transparent or solid stain. Paint will cause your deck fail years before it's time.

The coatings on the deck are white stain, but in the past few coats have peeled like paint. There's not a chance we will replace the planks, as the deck is rather temporary (around an above-ground pool). With that said, what would be my best option from this point forward? Thanks!

I had a Doughboy Pool and a redwood deck that I kept stained. Just plan on sanding and repainting every year. Paint it a color that goes with your pool. If it's green, paint it algae green. Just don't go too dark, your guests or kids will burn their feet on a hot day. BTW: With all that chlorine around it, why is there a mildew problem??

Sometimes you can flip the boards over and stain them. That way you don't have to buy new wood. Just a random thought.

MAB made a magical acrylic solid color stain product but last time I looked at their website it said it was available only will supplies of the tint base remained. You can tint it to any color. It is one of few solid color stain products I have encountered that did not caution against using it on horizontal deck surfaces. I don't know what Sherwin Williams is doing with the MAB products.

I guess your other option is to use floor and porch paint but as mentioned, expect continuous maintenance and I would add something for slip resistance if it is around a pool. It comes in a rainbow of factory colors and some paint brands can custom mix. It holds up alright for porches that are covered but is really not intended for decks exposed to the elements. Might buy you some time.

New or flipped boards and a semi-transparent stain would be a better option. Or if white is the look you want, some sort of maintenance free (theoretically) composite decking as Joecaption suggests an option.
