With that product---prime and paint all cuts before installing--

I'll leave the painting part to a more experienced painter---

Yes--Paint the new work to protect it---garage door also if you wish--

One thing many folks do not realize-----primer will not protect the work from the elements----
Primers only job is to provide a good bonding surface for paint.

The nature of that allows water to penetrate and degrade the surface below---so get some paint on that primed wood real soon.

The weak point for that kind of board is the cut ends. They tend to soak up moisture and expand. The way the facia in the pic is installed, with no drip edge or guttering, is going to make it particularly vulnerable to moisture.
In addition to painting, I would caulk all the cracks to help keep water out. I even like to put a thin smear of caulk on the exposed board ends to seal them up even better.
If your not going to put up gutters, installing a drip edge would greatly improve the life of the facia board.

Google 'drip edge shingle roof' for a picture of the missing drip edge under the lip of the shingles--this will help keep water from damaging the new facia.

i just looked at the shingles. they overhang about 1 1/2". would this not work as a drip edge ?
