weathered painted brick

how do you create the look of a weathered white painted brick on the exterior of a house? I read in a 1999 Southern Accents that there is a water-blasting technique. right now my house is not painted... just a rather ugly 1950s red brick

You might have to experiment but you can paint white and then powerwash (or I suppose even hose) off. Make sure you can adjust the pressure on your powerwasher. You may have to put a sealer coat over everything when you get the look you want as you will have degraded the paint.

You could try making a glaze with white paint and an acrylic medium but this is going to get expensive. Try floetrol and paint to experiement though.

Read up on liming. This is not a process for the faint of heart.

Be careful. Once you start painting brick you are more or less committed to the look as it is hard to get paint out of all the pores in brick. And you may end up with something that looks more like you couldn't get paint off the brick than that you were intentionally whitewashing it. And, come time to sell your place not all buyers will pleased with what you did.
