Washing surfaces before BIN coat

I happened to be reading the back of the BIN primer can, Zinsser Pigmented Shellac. Curl up with a good paint can once in a while. I noticed that it says not to use TSP, trisodium phosphate, as a cleaning agent prior to use. Knowing that I'd never seen that before and concerned that they discovered something and previous jobs might be failing, I called Zinsser. Plus, I've recommended it in this forum. It is a new warning. Turns out it is okay, but they tell you not to because people aren't rinsing after it's use, seems the dreaded sanding aversion has now spread to rinsing washed surfaces. Apparently, not rinsing leaves a chalky surface that prevents the BIN from bonding and it fails. I'm good, but if the problem is so widespread that they have to put a TSP ban on the label, a lot of guys probably aren't. Too bad. That's a shame. This is why we don't let children play with matches, because they can't be responsible with them and use them as they're intended. Ain't that some poop. BTW, I inquired about moisture levels with him, and they like no more than 12% before priming.

What about wiping with mineral spirits when covering varnish after sanding?

I've read the back of my new BIN can and they mention ammonia and water... that would make some excellent cat attractant before you paint. :D

To the best of my knowledge, solvents will evaporate and leave no residue to interfere with the next coat. I've used thinner to wipe spot hand grease off doors prior to a latex finish with no problem. I believe it's the detergents in the tsp which do not evaporate that cause the problem. I'll leave the ammonia alone, I have enough problems with cats and dogs and drop cloths. Seems damp canvas is inviting as well.

As with any cleaner you don't want to leave more residue on the walls than you are trying to clean off.
