Question

Want to paint a stained fiberglass door

Hello,
Our front door, which is not wood or metal but is a composite/fiberglass material (not sure if those are the right words or not), was stained brown during construction of the home. It must not have been sealed because while the inside of the door looks great, the outside has started pealing all over after only 1 year. I am interested in removing the stain (a light sanding seems like it will take it off easily) and painting the door. Are there any recommendations for type/brand of paint and any procedures for ensuring this exterior door won't peel so easily once painted?
Thanks!

You are on the right track- sand off what will come off, maybe even wash with a tsp substitute to get any chalking off. Then prime with a good bonding acrylic primer ( like Zinsser 123) . If it gets direct sun, or sits behind a glass storm, and gets direct sun it can heat up and the heat and UV's are what probably broke down the first coating. Use a mid to light color- and use a high quality satin or semi finish. Personally I like Ben Moore Aura for this, Muralo makes great products, etc.
Don't go cheap, you'll only need a qt. And dont go to a box store. ask at a real paint store where they will know exactly what you are talking about.

Thanks! So to summarize: remove the stain, prime with a good bonding acrylic primer like Zinsser 123, and then paint with a satin or semi-gloss paint?
There is actually a paint store right around the corner. I'll go there instead of Home Depot.

Want to paint a stained fiberglass door

Since its getting cold out - High 46 today and lows at freezing, but between 61 and 67 this weekend with lows around 40 - is it too late in the season to properly prime and paint the door? What would recommended outdoor temps be? And how long is recommended between priming and painting?
Thanks

I agree with Chris. 50F is about as low as you want to go. When the days are so short and the nights are long and cold, you would be well advised to put your exterior projects on hold. If you can't find enough to do inside, ask the Mrs..
