wall texture bubbling up

A previous owner had the walls textured and now I have small areas that are bubbling up and peeling off. I have scraped off what I could but now I have areas with a smooth surface. What do I have to do to fix this so it doesn't look stupid when I paint the walls? Are those cans of texture the answer or is there another way to deal with this?

Yup. This.

Or, you can opt to mix up some watered down joint compound and experiment with various tools to see if you can come up with the exact texture look to match what's on the wall now.

The Homax cans come in various texture patterns. You can look on the front of the cans to see which texture looks most like what you have and buy enough cans to do your patching.

Again there are so many textures out there we could really use a couple pics. If it's orange peel or knockdown those cans Shu recommend will work. Since peeling is a problem I would probably prime before you texture and after the texture.
