Uneven stain?

I recently built a pine farmhouse table.
I sanded it, beat it up, made it pretty rustic looking. Stained it, looked awesome.

However, I put a coat of clear satin poly on it last night, and in certain spots its shiny, and certain spots its rough and dull.
Is this just becuase its a first coat? Or did I do something wrong?

Uneven stain?

everything is cool. The finish ( not the stain) is getting sucked into the soft grain of pine, and not into the hard grain.
This always happens on the first coat. Sand smooth - use a fine sanding sponge or 220 grit paper, clean dust off and give it another coat.
For a table I would do this twice- for a total of 3 coats.
