TSP on lead paint
Is it safe to use TSP to wash down a wall that is (possibly) lead paint? I wouldn't use TSP, except the existing paint is quite glossy and I've had trouble getting new paint to adhere to it in the past.

It is actually a recommended way of prepping , because it is wet and doesn't cause dust. Toss the waste water down the toilet.
For extra good prep you can even wet sand with the tsp.
Wear gloves and use precaution with TSP hitting other surfaces.

You will be fine. Most of the stuff is faux TSP now anyhow.

TSP + Lead Based Paint = Lead Phosphate, which is a carcinogen.

first off check to see if it is lead paint you can get lead test swabs at paint stores ,8 for about 20 bucks .i think i seen test swabs at the big boxes 2 for about 8 bucks . of course how the heck do i know if your wall has lead paint. hey i'm sitting in my big chair totally wiped out from painting all day:huh:.but i can tell you i have painted many homes from the early fifties and sixties that did not have lead paint on the walls . now trim is another story . .even if their is its probably covered over wit coats of non lead paint but again who knows.just test it the directions are easy and they have demos on you tube .ok how i would do it is spot clean any grime then a coat of zinsser oil base cover stain bonding primer .then top coat your favorite latex paint

Most paint stores sell lead test kits. I think it wise to find out for sure if you are dealing with leaded paint rather than be put off by a possibility. TSP substitute cleaner will de-grease and de-gloss a surface so that you can use a high-quality adhesion promoting primer and acrylic finish.
