Trim Colour question

1 Attachment(s)
Currently we have painted the bottom trim on the house in dark brown to hide the dirt and the heavy duty waterproofing. (we being me and the mouse in my pocket). Take a look at the below and tell me if it would look funny if I painted the top piece of trim the same colour. Mr. armchair painter thinks it would look weird but I think it will balance it out. The windows and soffit and fascia will be staying white.

Thoughts?

I would leave it as is.

No strong opinion but realize if you paint a dark brown band horizontally around the roof line like that it will make the house look shorter and more squat. The visual line you create with the darker color will "trap" perception of height between the two bands.

Suuuuuuuuuuuuure band together with Mr. armchair painter.

I think I am symmetry OCD "there is one at the bottom so there should be one at the top"

Good point SD, never thought of the bands making the house look smaller. So I went out and painted a piece of scrap and tacked it up there this morning and you hit it on the head, makes the house look smaller. I will leave it white.

Visually we also process dark colors, when mixed with lighter ones, as being heavier so you made the right decision. Obviously the darker paint does not weigh any more than the white but things look wrong sometimes.

Rooms with chair molding and a darker color above it than below it, for example, create tension. This is not always bad and can be an interesting design trick but usually things just look off. In my example the lighter color below the can make us feel like it is not substantial enough to be holding up the darker wall above it.

We are human and symmetry is a natural state we seem to find comforting or at least familiar. Don't be too hard on yourself.

It's just me, but, I'm a purist when it comes to the house soffit and fascia.......I like it white. Even though it gets dirty, etc. it just sets the house off between the roof line and the body of the house.
