tips for caulking trim??

I have hemlock door casing and baseboard. Most of the casing is installed. Most is pre-painted. The baseboard is painted & cut but not installed yet. What tips do I need when I caulk the casing and baseboard trim prior to painting? ps. I already have the walls painted. Should I plan on a second coat after the caulking of casing & baseboard????

The main tip is to use paintable caulk (speaking from experience, here)

I like to be a minimalist with the caulk to avoid cleanup and mess. Just put a bit to cover the gaps and smooth it with your finger. There are tools you can use to smooth the caulk, too, but I've always used a finger.

And yes, you'll need to put another coat on the walls post-caulking.

1. Paint the trim first, then cut the wall; it is much easier to cut in a wall.

2. Don't buy cheap caulk, it's thin during application and shrinks too much after drying.

3. Many times we will have to make a second pass with the gun if the first has shrunk too much after drying.

4. Use t-shirt material for wipe down rags, towels leave marks.

5. Get plenty of caulk inside of gaps of else it will shrink in time and split open.

6. Use water to "polish" the caulk in the larger joints.
