Textured Ceiling

I have a textured ceiling and it seems that the previous owner did not prepare the ceiling with a proper basecoat primer therefore the entire layer of textured paint is pealing off, down to the sheetrock.

What is the best way to repair this?

To remove- mist it with water and then scrap it off.

Depends on the texture
Is it "popcorn", sand, or faux ("plaster")

For repair just scrape back loose popcorn and prime area. Get a popcorn in a can. I think Homax makes it. Only good for small areas. Get some pushpins and hang plastic from cieling to make youself a little spray booth. Follow directions on the can. Make sure you have the right size popcorn. Bring a bit of scrapings to paint store and have them tell you if unsure.

You will still see the repair unless you paint the whole ceiling. Here you can run into a problem if the whole ceiling is prone to failure. If you roll it out it will peel back. So spraying is the only option. Even then it will make ceiling wet for a while and some more tex might fail.

You really need to have whole ceiling done but if you just want a patch to hold you over till your ready for that then just do the can tex and live with the color difference till your ready to re-tex whole ceiling. I vote for knockdown instead of pop next time.
