Taking the top off of 5 GAL drum

Is there some trick to taking the top off of a 5 GAL paint drum? I have tried repeatedly but this thing is not coming off.

Did you pull off the plastic strip that goes around the bottom of the lid? If you still have trouble you can get one of these:

if it is the metal cans, use a screwdriver and pry up each flap. If plastic follow last post's suggestions.

theres a metal one on the market that i prefer. It has a point on it so you can cut the tab and also open gallons with it.I could not find a pic of it though
