Stripping paper messing up woodwork

Help....I'm removing glue/paper residue after stripping 96 yrs worth of painted wallpaper. Although I am using plastic...I cannot tape it to the wall to cover the woodwork as I am stripping the wall. Two sections I've already done....my beautiful 1913 varnished woodwork now has film and splotches on it. I need to preserve this beautiful wood, but not sure how to cover it with the plastic as i cannot secure the plastic. Any suggestions?? :(

Put a strip of tape along the woodwork, as tight to the wall as possible; then, using a second strip of tape, tape your plastic to the first piece of tape. You end up using more tape but it should work. I know this problem well.

Thank you so much....I do have water marks on two areas before I changed protocol.... Now instead of having plastic up against woodwork, I just have it on carpet only and immediately wipe up excess water before I start the stripping process. It's a lot more moving plastic around, etc. but don't have to use the tape and wiping up nicely before it has a chance to damage. :):)
