Stripping / painting an exterior door

I have a stained / varnished pine front door that I want to paint. I'm great with a hammer, not so much a paint brush... What do I need to do to prep it for paint?

Thanks in advance!

Do you have access to a cup gun?

Get some "StipeEze", some wire brushes, sandpaper, and some newspaper to put on the floor because you are getting ready to make a mess. Follow the instructions on the can and it will take the finish completely off. I just bought a $50 airless cup gun from Lowes and it does suprisingly well for a small job.

You only need to strip if you're going to restain.

In order to paint, you do not need to strip this door.

Sand the finsih and prime with zinsser bonding primer. Then paint.

Clean
Scuff sand
Wipe off dust
Prime with oil-based (alkyd) primer
Paint with quality exterior paint of your choice (acrylic or alkyd)
