strange drywall problem

We are redoing our bathroom and have a strange problem that just came up. We installed a vanity with a granite top where our old vanity was (granite top secured with clear silicon 2). The drywall behind it is the old painted drywall. It was very sturdy...no dampness, bubbles, stains, or soft spots. It had, I believe, a coat of drywall mud on it. When he went to sand it down in order to prime the walls, he noticed a yellow stain on about a a foot section and a hole formed in at the edge of this section. We have never smoked anywhere remotely around that section of the house soit can't be due to nicotine, and the water pipes are not near it (plus the water in that room has been turned off for nearly 3 months). The stain looked almost a urine color. Our drywall guy, who has been doing this for a long time, say he has never seen anything like it. Has anyone heard of anything like that, and could suggest why this may have happened?

I've heard of old mud truning a yellowish color, but seems like it would be in a bigger area.

It could also have been stained by soap bleeding behind the paint??????? Not totally sure how to get paint to stick two a soapy surface?????

Try spot priming it with BIN pigmented shellac. If it will hold the coat, that will hold the stain.

It would be very helpful if you could send a pic.

if the hole is a small pin hole size at the edge of the stain...it could be possibly caused by termites. press all around and inside the stained area to see if any spots sink in and form a trail.

no alarm yet until we all see the photos.

Unfortunately it has already been covered up and I didn't take a picture.
In talking to the drywall guy this morning, it did not have mud on it, but happened to the old drywall and they saw it when they went to prime. Strange thing was we didn't notice it being like that when when we put in the vanity.

I'm sure it's not termites...thank goodness.
