Staining wood putty to match board

I would like to fill in nail holes on several oak boards. But everytime we try to stain wood filler, it never takes the stain like we hope. There is always a difference in color. Yet all the books say to fill the holes with filler and stain. Does anyone know what we are doing wrong?

mix the stain to the putty until you get a match. Then putty the nail holes.

When we are filling nail holes in stained trim we start with white glazing ( DAP ), then we tint using universal oil tints such as raw umber, raw siennna etc.. These are found at good paint store. However if you want to do it easy, most paint stores carry pre-mixed colored putty.
I have never found any good wood fillers that take a penetrating stain well enough. Good luck.

Give Timbermate a shot. I first heard of it a couple years ago and now it's the only one I use for stain work. If you go to their website you can order a free sample.
