I will be building a keyboard tray for my parents' desk. I'd like to stain/poly rather than paint the wood so it will last longer (does that make sense?).

Seems sort of a fun idea, and if it works, even better. Thoughts? I'd follow it up by minwax Ebony stain then poly.
Haven't decided on species of wood yet. My thoughts were for oak, but I guess if I am going for crazy dark, it doesn't really matter?
