Staining door

Hi,

I'm currently trying to stain a pine door with Minwax American
Heritage 230. the stain is some what viscous, and is very hard to apply. It also seems as if there is more oil in the mixture than stain, and has a prominent sheen once applied is this normal? Any help or suggestion would be grateful.

sand the door with 220 so it will accept the stain.

apply the stain and let it sit for a few min but keep it wet - the longer it sits the darker it gets

wipe off the excess stain with a clean rag

let dry for 24 hours before you apply your clear

Pine doesn't take stain as good as hard woods. some people like to use wood conditioner but I am not a fan of it. you will have a sheen on the stain after is dries, that is fine, dont worry about it.

you can apply more than one coat of stain before you seal the door if you want it to get darker. try not to let it dry overnight if you want to darken it up.

IME, the Minwax stain has a tendency to settle around the bottom and sides of the can. Stir it thoroughly. It's hard to do with a full can; try pouring some of it off into a larger (clean) bucket, stir the remainder, and then recombine the two. As stated by the previous post, a little sheen is normal, even after you've wiped it off. It will lessen when dry.
