Staining a deck white
I have two decks on my home. I would like to stain then white . One has never been painted nor stain so its no problem, but then old deck has grey pourch paint on it.

Question is do I need to strip then grey off or will then stain cover? If I need to strip whats then best stripper to use?

I have used an exterior stripper made by Behr for porch/deck finishes several times. It takes a little more than the label states when removing a painted surface vs a stained one. I found that removing the residue with a pressure washer shaved hours off the project and had me staining the next day.

:wink:One word of caution: be very careful walking on any surface that has this stuff on it - it's slippery.

C, if you're using a solid stain there's no need to strip. Just give a good cleaning and sanding and go. If you're planning to use a translucent stain, think about using a solid stain.

Sorry to jump back in...but, you need to make sure that the "grey" paint is NOT an oil based porch/floor paint. Nothing will stick to this but another similar product.

I would still go with the stripping.
