Staining deck and fence in November

I hired a paint contractor to stain my deck and cedar fence white. He was supposed to do this in late July or early August. It is almost November and he says he can still do it. Should I agree or fire him? I live in PA.

Sherry, go easy on your painting contractor. With all the rain we had here in the east and midwest, everyone is behind on their outside work. It CAN be done, but it will require at least several days of 55-65 degree weather and no chance for heavy dew in the mornings. If he can wash it, let it dry, apply the stain and allow it to dry properly within a small window of opportunity........well, it can be done. My advice: Wait til spring......you won't be using your deck until then anyway.....to finish it now is rather pointless......have it done in April or May of next spring when the weather is consistently decent.

Sherry, I agree with Gymschu. It can be done, but the window is practically closed. The stain season ends a bit before the paint season. I had a guy who wanted me to stain his deck after all the leaves had fallen. I said no, wait for the spring. Fortunately, we got it in last week on that nice stretch of good weather, and we just got it in with no time to spare. I would wait until spring as well. Why take the chance? BTW, the deck I'm speaking of is in Wilmington, DE. Where are you located in PA?

Thanks very much to both of you for your help. I will ask him to wait until spring.
