staining cabinets

We own a barber shop with oak cabinets that are old and need some work. We are thinking of staining or painting them black. What do you think would be easier to do? staining or painting. The finish is pretty worn on them right now.

If they already have a finish on them, no new stain can penetrate- needs to be new wood. So painting would be easiest.
Need to clean well, sand to create a dull surface, prime with a good bonding primer ( Zinsser 123 or Bondz are good- get the grey tinted ones) and then a high quality mid sheen paint made for trim.

Agreed. Stain only works on exposed wood grain.

How much wear do these get subjected to? Black paint is going to show scrapes and dings. For a hair place, I might think about painting them with a factory mix black Melamine paint.

Truth be known, you want to use a factory mix black for just about any paint you pick.

Do you have the lighting availed to handle black cabinets if you are used to oak? You are going to loose lots of light aborbed into the black.
