stain trim bofore or after install?

I just bought some base trim for my house and wondering what is the best way to stain it, before I install it or install it and then stain it? It's an oak 1x3" board with quarter round on the bottom and some decorative trim on top of the 1x3. I will be staining them and then 2 coats of poly. If I stain it first will I get a good fit even though there is poly in between the woods? Thanks for any advice with this.

no prob, it's always easier to lay them flat and work on them, it greatly reduces runs and wear and tear on the knees crawling around brushing baseboards.... after attaching, tiny touchups may be required.
