To stain or not?
I live in southern Maine. I bought a foreclosure in August. The house had been empty for 1.5 years.
The house is 6 years old. The deck is in decent shape, but the stain is weathered and faded. It looks like the stain is probably 4+ years old.
I meant to get the deck stained in early Sept, but I ended up getting sick and spent 2 weeks in bed. Now it is October and the weather has been fairly rainy. I have a small window coming up this week of 2-3 days of sunny weather. I have to work.....but can fit in some time to spend on the deck. With the small window of dry weather and limited time, I don't think I will have the time to strip, wash and then stain the deck. What are my options for getting some protection for the deck for the winter?
My thought was to wash and scrub the deck on Weds. Let it dry out on Thurs. And then spray a clear water sealant onto the deck on Friday. Then in the spring.....strip the deck and stain it properly. Does this sound like it would work and provide some protection over the winter? Thoughts and comments appreciated. Thanks!
Nope, not enough drying time with your lower temperatures at night.
All you would end up doing is sealing in the moisture which will cause mold.
You could try a simple oil based penetrating sealer I guess but if you do not have time to prep at all I am not sure what you could expect. You could mix your own mix of 1:1 mineral spirits and processed, not raw, lindseed oil or buy one of the commercial sealers. Seems a bit of a waste of money but I do understand your desire to get some protection on the deck.
What you do not want to use as any wax based product like Thompson's Water Seal or you will have a mess and the mold Joe mentions could be more a probability rather than a possibility. And come Spring when you want to do the deck properly, the wax will be in your way.
