stain color

I am perplexed as to what color to stain the floor.

Too dark and I lose the wood grain of the rustic red/white oak hardwood.
Too light and it is wood everywhere.

The pine has turned a yellow/ golden hue. The entire cottage has these boards floor and ceiling. Cherry cabinets.

I was thinking perhaps an espresso???

Any suggestions

Hey Toolbelt, colors in the world of stain are all kind of relative. "Espresso" in one might be "cherry" in another,

. However, if we are talking about Minwax, you might consider a "Special Walnut" color, #224. It's a medium brown with red hues that should complement both the cabinetry and the paneling you have and should mix well with the natural color of your oak flooring. You might consider putting a "Natural" stain on your ceiling though, if you go too dark there, it will press the room down and make it feel more like a cave.

I just meant in a color chart but then again you'd be right as paint companies differ as well.

The 8 inch pine boards were installed in 91 and have aged. You can see the color difference in the picture as there was once a rad there.

Why would I put a natural on the ceiling? What would be the purpose there?

Yeah certainly, natural would be a good choice if you have unfinished wood on your ceiling, it only darkens the wood a bit, but provides some protection. It's like ceilings with drywall, you still put paint on top of your primer but you might use a ceiling paint or a normal flat sheen. Also, natural keeps your wood a lighter shade so you don't end up feeling compressed by a darker ceiling.
