Spots of paint coming up on Kool Deck help please!
I painted a pool deck and lanai with Behr 1 part epoxy acrylic paint over a well prepared 8 year old (no problems) acrylic surface a little over a year ago. Now irregular varying diameter circles of Behr paint are coming up under the lanai, pool pathways, around waterfall area, and close to screen bottom plates. Does anyone have any idea of the cause, and recommendation to remedy?
My first inclination, after discussing with Behr, is to power wash the painted areas to remove any loose material, and then spot painting. Behr has not made a recommendation, but offers to supply materials at no charge. Hopefully, one of the members of this forum will have had similar problems and a positive remedy. Thanks, RvrBoatVet |

The underside looks exactly like the topside, no residue.
I have also looked at the spot the flake comes from, trying to tell if the surface was too slick for adherence, again, not the case. Also, there were no bare concrete areas before painting. The only reason for recoating was to change the color of the deck. |

He thinks your choice of paints is the problem. Behr gets a failing grade in many areas here. They pay me $.25 a post to say I love it so I do!
I think you should power-wash the heck out of it and scuff it, prime it, and if you have to use epoxy make it a two part and anything but Behr. Just my $.02NOTE: Even a two-part epoxy will scratch, so be aware. Last edited by Sprayboy; 12-22-2009 at 03:21 PM. Reason: addition |

Thanks Sprayboy. I am coming to the same conclusion. That is why there is a difference in price of $30 / gallon.

Use anything but Behr next time. Shop at a paint store.

I'd also recommend switching to different, higher quality, product
Stop by your local Paint Store The product may cost a little more, but it will be a better product Unfortunately the Behr has such a high rate of failure, it is certainly (especially with your prep and chip inspection results) on the top of the list of possibilities in this case In fact, I'd be hard pressed to come up with a #2 for the list at this point |
