Splotchy paint after patch job

So when we bought the house, the previous idiot had punched a hole through the wall between the garage and the living room...about 1.5" in diameter. I spackled and painted with a matching color (matched perfect on other parts of the wall), but in this section there was a dark stain where I painted.

I thought, maybe it needed to be primed, so I primed the area and painted it again, this time parts of it are the right color, but it's still splotchy and dark in places around where the hole was.

Any remedy to this short of repainting the entire living room? Thanks!

You need to cover patches with a sealing primer or they "flash" which gives a modified sheen to the paint. Which is why you still see it.

Thanks. Would an oil-based primer seal better? I'm painting with Latex. How long should the primer dry before painting? Can you recommend a brand?

What paint and primer have you tried already? I have had good luck with SW PrepRite ProBlock Latex. Dries in an hour and is water-base. There is no need to use an oil-base here, just a water-base that doesn't suck. (i.e. Avoid Kilz2/Premium at all costs)

The paint is Lowe's Valspar, the primer I tried is Glidden Gripper. Didn't do much.

Youch. Yes, first, get a refund for the paint and primer. No excuse for flashing after primer + 2 coats paint. Next, have an actual paint store match the color, based on the Valspar color code, prime the whole wall with paint-store primer and re-paint the wall. It will probably not be an exact match with the other walls, but it should be close enough.

Or, you could get another gallon of the Valspar for free (the store shouldn't give you flack on it) and try another coat of the cheap paint.
