Smoothing a door with peeling paint

I'm working with a hollow wood door (about 30 years old). It was painted, then wallpapered.
I removed the wallpaper from the back of the door, scraped all the glue and loose old paint off, washed it, and gave it a coat of oil based primer. I'd like to use a semi-gloss so I definatly need somthing to smooth it out with before giving it a final prime and topcoat. My question is what do I use? Seems to me like spackle would just crack given the nature of wood and it being a door. Wood filler seems a little too solid to work into such a shallow wide groove.

For future reference the door should have been either replaced or stripped.

Bondo might work to smooth it with, but in this circumstance it's a maddening process. No matter what you use or how much you feather it, more than likely it's going to show through the semi-gloss.

Thanks.
I completly forgot bondo can be used on wood. I think I'll give it a shot and see how it goes.
Stripping it is another great suggestion though if the bondo doesn't work out well. It wouldn't take too long to bring it down to the garage, hit it with that Silent Paint Remover contraption and repaint it.

Don't do the bondo. If you do then stripping would be next to impossible.

You can get hollow core wood doors for like $15 or $20. Just replace it, it may even be cheaper than bondo!

I use joint compound for smoothing out doors
Just like a wall
