What paint are you using? Smooth is more operator than roller. Many of us can make a smoother finish with a 1/2 " than a DIY can with a 3/8.
Use good materials and quality tools . That is huge.

The smoothest walls I ever achieved were with a mohair roller cover using OIL-based Satin from Sherwin-Williams. In today's world with almost all latex paints, a perfectly smooth wall takes some work. If it's new drywall, a great primer is a must, then a thorough sanding, followed by a cleanup of the walls.........then apply your first coat, allow to dry for a day or so, then another light sanding, clean, and apply final coat. To attain perfection, well, it's tough.......no matter what the roller cover, you still get some shedding of the fabric onto the painted wall..........also, there's "buggers" in the paint. Good luck.

The smoothest walls I ever did (years ago) was with BM Dulnamel oil eggshell, all coats rolled on and tipped ( backbrushed) floor to ceiling- paint thinned to perfection.
Waterbornes just don't give you the time to do that.
Might be able to do it with spray if you really knew what you were doing.

As for roller covers, I either buy the best Wooster roller cover I can find with 1/2 inch nap or Purdy's Golden Eagles.
