OK. Holidays are over and I finally started going forward on this. I removed the second floor toilet, and could see that the wax ring was definitely leaking. I bought two plastic risers and stacked them to accomodate the raised floor, and a top notch wax ring with the plastic flange or whatever it's called. Previously whoever did it before just tried a extra fat wax ring it looks like, but it wasn't enough I guess. I think the plastic risers will help it alot, and pretty sure I have the source of the leak fixed.
Next step is open up the 1st floor ceiling to see what damage is done. But pretty sure I got the source of the leak.
Nice job! You are right on track, now it's a matter of going for that ceiling. Just make sure that it was the toilet when you have the ceiling open - you don't want to go through this again. Keep us updated, and if you have any questions remember that this board is always here to help.

Fortunately there wasn't any damage really, and had someone come in and put in some drywall and skim coat it to close up the hole that was made to inspect. So I think I can cross this off my list finally!
