Can anyone give advice how to repair the top of a shutter.
I was going to just quickly paint them but found a bolt had pulled out of one so I took them down to replace the bolt and paint them. I found it came loose because the top was rotted and wet. The tops weren't even painted.
I stupidly dug out the rot thinking I'd get to sound wood. By the time I did, I basically didn't have the top any more.
I used a hardener and filled with MH ready patch which didn't dry. I started cutting a piece of wood to replace the top piece today.
Any advice how to do this so the shutter won't fall apart when I hang it?
The middle of top and half of the right side piece next to it are rotted. Should I make 1 straight piece of wood to replace this???
These are pics before I dug out rot.
Sounds like you need the advice of a carpenter not a painter.
Yes, this was kind of stupid and I can't figure out how to delete it.
While I was working on my front door last week, a lot of painters working at the end of my block kept stopping and telling me tips for door. Like fill with Bondo, etc. I noticed the other shutter had some pink filling as a repair that my painter did a few years ago. So I thought if I posted here, I'd get all kinds of quick advice how to fix this just enough to paint and rehang it. I would just buy a new one but it's not in budget at all.
Thanks for telling me. I'll put it under carpenter. Please disregard.
