I'm about to start a major renovation of an 80-year-old bungalow, including removal of interior walls. I also need to build a backyard fence, in the woods about 100 feet behind my house. The 1x6 pine planks that were used for trim in the house would be perfect for the fence, but those planks may have some lead paint on one side.
1) How can I tell whether they have lead?
2) If they do have lead, could I simply encapsulate the planks in paint or in an exterior varnish of some sort to prevent the lead paint from chipping into the environment?
3) Would the amount of lead in an exterior use such as that be inconsequential (i.e. isn't there a lot more lead out there simply from exterior paint on all the old houses in that neighborhood, for example?
