semi gloss over flat - exterior

My assumption is that if the two paints are the exact same color and brand and just a different finish then I can put semi over the flat correct?

This is in reference to the exterior doors I had to work on that were starting to show signs of rust.

Cleaned, sanded and primed em yadda yadda but instead of leaving them primed and looking like crap I put on a coat of exterior that I was using for the trim on a few spots outside. Color looks great and finish looked great.....when it was wet. Dry....not so much except at a distance.

I know I should have done the semi straight up but was hoping to be able to cheat for a few months while getting other more important stuff done but I cannot stand how it looks. The doors and paint job are fine just hating the flat finish.

Can I throw the other stuff straight over the top or are you going to send me to purgatory and make me prime again

Thanks

Robyn

If the flat finish was oil based and you put exterior latex over it without primer you could experience some problems. Otherwise your second coat should bring the sheen to what you expect.

You did prep the surface right? If it was chalking and you did not remedy that you could also have problems.

Paint away.

Might I ask why or what you were painting flat on an exterior?

Better if you had mixed them together, then painted.

Thanks all didn't think it would be an issue but wanted to check. I have only put semi over primer over flat and wasn't sure if it need to be primed again.

SD = yup scrubbed, sanded and primed with metal primer then the flat. The rust issue was from a small spot where something banged the door floating in the flood and was starting to rust because of the crap in the water.

Chris...was cheating temporarily. Didn't want to leave them just primed why we were finishing other stuff up and thought what the heck at least it will look somewhat finished till I get to it...it does but does not look right so will be putting the semi on. Looks rather hackish

No of course you don't have to prime over flat paint. If you did, you'd have to prime between every coat of paint you put on anything, which is ridiculous and leads to an infinite series of paint coatings if you think about it.
