Sanding and painting old shed

I recently purchased a home, and the shed looks horrible! Super old, white, peeling/flaking paint. Do I need to fully sand the ENTIRE shed in order to paint it? Whats my best, least expensive option? Thank you!

What is it made out of? Wood, metal, vinyl?

I guess that would have helped to know. It's a very large, wood shed.

First off, you may want to check for lead. A lead-test kit is a good idea before you go scraping and sanding the shed. A good pressure wash to clean it up.......allow to dry. Scrape all the loose paint you can with a carbide scraper. If you're really fussy about the look of the shed, you can sand where you scraped to feather in the rough areas. Sanding ISN'T necessary but if you feel the need........anyway, once you're satisfied with the substrate after scraping/sanding, gently wash off any remaining dust and allow to dry. Then you can prime the bare spots with a quality exterior latex primer and apply 2 coats of quality latex paint.
