I'm staining some trim and then putting two coats of poly on it. I'm using rags for the stain and a brush for the poly. In between staining and coats of poly should I sand with something? Thanks
You do not sand after the stain. You must sand between each coat and then use a tack cloth to remove all dust. To remove roughness and dust bunnies on the final coat, use 600 grit wet sandpaper with lemon oil.
Before applying your first coat of stain I would use the tack cloth to remove dust and debris, after the stain dries apply your first coat of poly and let dry. Then I would recommend using a very fine steel wool use your finger tips, you will be able to feel it becoming smoother. Tack cloth again and your final coat of poly. It will look amazing and feel as smooth as glass!
Steel wool has always worked for me, as long as you tack cloth before reapplying poly. I've used it in multimillion dollar homes, and it always looks great. Fine grit sand paper works too, but I just don't think the finished product looks as good, or feels as smooth. Your choice!
thank for the info Srother9 im not a finishing expert so if you say its good its good but i gotta say ive seen some wacky stuff on multi million dollar homes
Steel wool works great with finishes like danish oil and tung oil. With poly best to avoid it. If used, be sure to wipe with mineral spirits, let dry and tack cloth.
