revitalizing cedar siding
I have recently purchsed a house with cedar siding and I need to do something with it. Teh cedar siding itself is in great shape but the stain and appearence is downright bad. There are 2 major problems with it.
1st, whoever originally put on the stain got a little lazy after the first few feet. You can tell where they started and after that they didn't put on enough stain so the whole house looks 'blotchy'- not enough stain in lots of parts of the house.
2nd, the stain itself is now starting to flake off. For whatever reason I can take parts of my siding and pick off the stain (yes, it's stain) with my fingernail, down to the bare wood.
So what are my options for my siding? Any suggestions?
The most common option is to remove the failing stain and re-stain the house.
One or more methods may be needed. Powerwashing should remove a lot of it. Scraping and sanding will remove the rest.
If all the failing stain comes off, down to bare wood, you have the option of re-staining with a semi-transparent or solid body stain.
If the failing stain does not come off down to the wood, then re-stain with a solid body stain only.
