Looking to repaint a room that has a paint treatment/design where different colors where splatted on the white wall, also hand prints were put on it.
Wondering what is the easiest/best way to make the wall smooth again? I believe it is latex paint on there now.
the 2 options I have come up with are:
1 - redrywall the room (to expensive)
2 - skim coat the entire room with drywall mud applied with a roller and flattened with a large ceiling texture drywall knife.
I'm guessing the existing decorative finish has a heavy texture that would show through a paint only job. You might do some good just sanding, maybe a lot of good, but if its latex like your thinking, it likely won't sand back smooth.
Still, I would sand it first and at least knock down the high spots. Probably will have to skim if my mental picture is correct.
Sand first with about 60-80 grit to smooth as much as possible any texture spots. Then skim coat only the areas that need it. If this is most of the room, then go ahead. Sand this, prime and you're ready.
Thanks. Note to anyone else reading later. If your going to do paint splatter and handprints maybe look at a paintable wallpaper. Put up wallpaper, then paint. This way it could be easily removed in 5 years or whatever.

I mean you could remove the wallpaper then repaint whatever color you wanted. and yes it should be at least primed with a wall covering primer or have been previously painted first, not fresh new bare drywall.
