We have a very large deck...10' x 42'....we just sanded the entire deck to remove the old paint. A huge job! We have removed almost all of the paint and don't want to have to repaint anytime soon. What exterior paint do you suggest would be the best? We are leaning towards an enamel paint with some type of wood protector. Any suggestions?

The problem with any kind of paint or high build sealer on a deck is that when it starts to fail it will peel and you will have a mess similar to what you have just dealt with. It may last a while but will eventually fail. I would use a penetrating oil. It will have to be redone every year or two but it will just start to fade out rather than peel. Prep is relatively easy. Just low pressure wash, let dry a day or two and apply the oil.

Yes, DO NOT PAINT your deck. The spindles are ok to paint, just nothing horizontal. Use a good Transparent/Semi-transparent stain ( NOT BEHR ) Sikkens makes a really nice product, and Benjamin Moore has a new product called "Arborcoat" which is also very nice. There are also some good regional brands out there. "Wood Defender" is one based out of Texas. I've always like the regional ones. They seem to be more tailor made for the local climate...Like a product developed in Texas will work the best there....but in lets say Vermont, it wouldnt do as well. :)
