removing paint from cedar shakes

I am assisting in restoring an old railway station and the shakes/shingles have been painted a barn red ... some years ago. We want to get them to be as close to their original appearance as possable. Replacing them is easier but some of the shingles have initials and names etc. carved into them and this is part of the history.
Any suggestion on paint removal? As cedar os quite soft, we are hesitant to use chemicle removers or sanding.
Thanks.

what about corn cob blasting? It is used for log homes or you could try a product called timber wash first to see if it is able to get through the paint.
